“Envy is an emotion for those who can’t get what they want.”

At first glance, this seems like a simple truth. But Scripture goes deeper, showing us that envy is not just about wanting what others have—it’s about distrusting God’s provision and plan for our lives.

Paul warns in Galatians 5:19–21 that envy is among the “works of the flesh” that lead us away from the kingdom of God. Envy feeds discontentment and corrodes our joy. Instead of celebrating God’s blessings in others, envy whispers: “God has forgotten you. He loves them more than you.”

Yet God’s Word reminds us otherwise:

• “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1)

• “No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” (Psalm 84:11)

• “Every good and perfect gift is from above.” (James 1:17)

Envy makes us chase after what was never meant for us, while gratitude and trust anchor us in what God has already placed in our hands.

Cain’s envy of Abel (Genesis 4:3–8) led to destruction, but Joseph’s brothers’ envy (Genesis 37:11) eventually served God’s greater plan for salvation. Both stories remind us: envy blinds, but faith opens our eyes to God’s sovereignty.

Reflection:

Instead of envying what others have, ask: “Lord, what do You want to grow in me? What is my portion in this season?” When we align our hearts with His purposes, envy loses its grip.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I’ve let envy rule my heart. Teach me to rejoice in the blessings of others and to trust that You have not forgotten me. Help me to walk in contentment, knowing that in Christ I have everything I truly need.
Amen.
